YOUNG ATHLETES, QC TOP GRANDMASTERS TO BE FETED AT PALMDALE CHESS

YOUNG athletes who brought gold medal and glory to the country together with Quezon City top grandmasters to be feted prior the start of first-ever Palmdale Import and Export Co. Rapid Chess Tournament gets underway on Sunday (June 28) at the Ramon Magsaysay Cubao High School (RMCHS) along Edsa, Cubao (opposite of Nepa Q-Mart).
No less than National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP) president Prospero “Butch” Pichay Jr., and Quezon City Mayor Feliciano “Sonny” Belmonte have invited to grace the opening rites at 11 a.m. that includes Vice Mayor Herbert “Bistek” Bautista, 3rd district rep. Matias Defensor, 4th district rep. Nanette Castelo Daza, 4th district councilors headed by Bayani Hipol, Janet Malaya, Edsel Lagman, Bong Suntay, Vincent Belmonte, Barangay Kaunlaran Chairman Teresa Atentar, Barangay Alabang Chairman Victor Ulanday and Barangay Pinagkaisahan Chairman Vincent Saab, in this event backed up by sportsman/ businessman Fernando “Kuya Nanding” Reyes, FDR International, XT2000 Orange Oil and Diana Secret for anti aging treatment, which aims to promote chess in the grassroots-level in close cooperation with Dickies and Filway Marketings Inc. and Time Life Books.
Austin Jacob Literatus of Davao City, Cherry Ann Mejia of Taguig City, Paulo Bersamina of Pasay City and Samantha Glo Revita of Rosales, Pangasinan won the coveted gold medal in the 2009 ASEAN + Age Group Chess Championships in Vietnam.
Milo Checkmate bet Stephen Rome Pangilinan, a six-year-old boy emerged as the over-all champion in his division in the recently concluded Las Vegas International Chess Festival.At young age, he bested other competitors in the Susan Polgar under eight ­year-old division. He won first place after garnering a total of 5 points last June 4 to 7 competition held at the South Point Hotel, Casino and Spa.
Other awardees that includes Eugene Torre, Asia’s First GM, an alumni of RMCHS batch 68, GMs Mark Paragua, Jayson Gonzales and Rogelio “Joey” Antonio Jr., a World Chess Championships qulaifier.
Jonas Magpantay, 15, freshman student of Ponciano Bernardo High School in Cubao is this year’s 2009 Philippine Pool Championships youngest qualifier.  Magpantay, a resident of Barangay Kaulanran, District IV of Quezon City settled a quarterfinal finish in the 2008 Reno World Junior of Pool Championships.
“Sa kanilang murang edad (Literatus,Bersamina, Mejia, Revita, Pangilinan, Magpantay) ay marami na silang nabigay na karangalan sa bayan kaya nararapat lamang na bigyan sila ng parangal sa tinamo nilang tagumpay,” said Tournament organizer RP and US Chess Master Almario Marlon Bernardino Jr.
” Napakaganda nilang huwaran sa mga kabataan,” said Bernardino, a chess columnist and radio commentator.
” Hindi din matatawaran ang kontribusyon na nabigay naman sa larangan ng chess nina GMs Torre, Antonio, Paragua at Gonzales. Hindi lamang karangalan ng lungsod Quezon bagkus buong bayan,” added Quezon City native Bernardino.
The three-division event (kiddies 14 years old and below, womens and non-master),sponsored by sportsman/ businessman Fernando “Kuya Nanding” Reyes,  FDR International, XT2000 Orange Oil and Diana Secret for anti aging treatment, which aims to promote chess in the grassroots-level.
The one-day event also supported by RMCHS Cubao Principal IV Dr. Josefina Perlado, Filway Marketings Inc.CEO/President Hector Tagaysay, Dickies vice president Dody T. Arcaya, GM Mark Monera Magadan of MPC Aluminum and Glass Trading, Dr. Alfredo Paez, Dr. Bong Perez, Mr. Joel Gaudia, Mr. Victor Ulanday, Mr. Joel Pineda, Mr. Jun Balgan, Chess Arbiters Association of the Philippines (CAAP), Marikina Chess Federation, Hi-tec shoes and Jubilant Advertising.
Free Lunch to all participants and entitled to join the raffle game in the said three division tournament (Non-Master, Kiddies 14 years old and below, Womens). Registration fee for the non-master category is P300 while for the kiddies (14 years old and below) and womens divisions are P200 each. Meanwhile, Meralco Chess Club’s junior players Paul & Pia Casiano, Rhal Sol Cruz, Earl Cabugao, Julian Sabularse, Jam Jerusalem and Paolo Bersamina head the top-notch roster of players vying for the top honors.
San Beda College and University of the East varsity chess team already confirmed their participation according to head coach Henry Mariano as well the the Far Eastern University, the World Inter-Varsity Champion, Ateneo de Manila University, University of the Philippines and host school RMCHS under the guidance of RMCHS Cubao Principal IV Dr. Josefina Perlado and Mr. Raul Cruz.
Other early entries that includes Jimson Bitoon, Arquingel, Narquingden Reyes and RP artists champion Albert Rivera.
