SEGARRA, MAYOR ALL SET FOR THE TITLE DEFENSE IN EXECUTIVE CHESS

NATIONAL MASTER Randy Segarra of RCBC is all set to defend his chess crown against a dozen chess player when the 6th leg of the exciting 2009 Philweb Corporation- Human Plus – National Executive Active Chess Championships gets underway on July 11, Saturday,1 pm at the Human Resources Development Conference Room of the Department of Agrarian Reform, Elliptical Road, Quezon City.
The DLSU-Taft head coach took the 3rd, 4th and 5th leg after Romblon’s six-time RP Executive Grand Prix champion Dr. Jenny Mayor won the first two legs in Group A.
Mayor, also a Quiapo church lay minister and the school dentist of Nazarene Catholic School (formerly Quiapo Parochial School) posted 87 points on account of two leg victories, one runner-up finish and two creditable showings in the first five legs in Group A leading the way in the Grand Prix points. Segarra has 60 GP points for second place due to his three straight victories in Group A to become the most winningest player of the event.
Meanwhile, lawyer Cliburn Anthony Orbe of Iligan City now employed at Philweb in Ayala Avenue, Makati City is currently towing the field in Group B leads with 59 pts., followed by chess entrepreneur Joel Cocjin of Iloilo with 51, Philippine Army’s Primo Virtudazo, 44, PACE treasurer and Manila businessman Jun Balgan, 42.
There will be 10 legs with the cash-rich 16-man Grand Finals scheduled in September. The Top 8 from Group A and Group B in Grand Prix standings will advance to the finals.

In another local chess, the1st Saturday Magnolia Non-Master Chess Tournament (1950 Below NCFP Rapid Rating) reels off today, Saturday July 4, 2009 9:00am at 4th Floor Perez Building Doña Soledad cor. Australia Sts, Better Living, Parañaque City. The 18th edition is backed up by Mayor Florencio Bernabe of Paraňaque City, Sports supporter Olive Juico De Guzman, and Magnolia Health Tea Drinks.
Consistent Prizes will be distributed as follows; Champion Php 3,000, 2nd 2,000, 3rd 1,000. Top category winners of Senior, Kiddy, and Lady will receive P 500 each and a copy of Pinoy Chess Magazine. Tournament format shall apply the Seven(7) Round Swiss System and the rate of play is Twenty Five(25) minutes per player to finish the game. This event is organized by Barangay Don Bosco Chess Club (BDBCC) headed by Adviser Dr. Bong Perez and VP Cecil Padua.
The tournament will be supervised by the National Association of Philippine Chess Arbiters, Inc. (NAPCA) headed by Arbiter Rading Moje and Bobot Rosanto Torres.
