AFTER three rounds of play, Far Eastern University, University of Sto. Tomas and
Ateneo de Manila University remained on top in their respective divisions in the

72nd season of the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) chess teamchampionships at the UST’s new Tan Yan Kee Student Center in Espana, Manila on Sunday.The Baby Tamaraws playing under the tutelage of GM Jayson Gonzales settled a 2-2 draw overthe Junior Warriors of legendary coach Henry Mariano but still on top in the juniors divisionwith a total 10 points.

Dr. Miriam Garcia ( FEU Fern directress),”said FEU head coach GM Jayson Gonzales.

Vince Angelo Medina and Jeremiah Alfonso won their matches in board 2 and 4 against UE’s Bryan
Barcelon and Chessa Nadera while NM Alcon John Datu and WNM Christy Lamiel Bernales carried
the fifth for the Recto based school beating FEU’s Paul Evangelista and Mc Dominique Laguna
in board 1 and 3, respectively.

The Morayta based squad earlier blanked BUllpups, 4-0, and Junior Archers, 4-0, in order.
Reigning back-to-back champion Baby Falcons of head coach Christopher Rodriguez, meantime
maintained their second position after beating BUllpups, 3.5-0.5, yesterday to raised
their total 6.5 points. Ali Guya, Steven James Dacanay and Jesse Abucejo provided the important
wins while top gunner Timothy John So-Kua split the point with NU’s board 1 Daniel Elijah Sanchez.

After getting first round bye, the Baby Falcons beat the Blue
Eaglets, 3-1, on Saturday to open their three-peat title bid in a bright note.
Tigers Cub under coach GM Ronald Dableo edged Junior Archers, 2.5-1.5, in other interesting
match-up. The Blue Eaglets took bye yesterday.

Meanwhile, the Growling Tigers under coach NM Winston Silva defeated the Falcons, 3.5-0.5,
with Joey Florendo, Gerald Ferriol and Patrick Florendo spearheaded the Espana based school
to raise their total output 9 points in the Senior mens category.

Board 3 player Jude Emil Fronda settled a truce with Adamson’s Ferdinand Reyes Jr.
“Masayang-masaya ako maganda kasi nilalaro ng mga player natin, said UST senior mens coach
NM Winston Silva.

Reigning three-peat champion Tamaraws at second place with 8 points with a 3-1 victory over
the Green Archers.Lyndon Sombilon and Kevin Morano score twin kill in board 1 and 4 while
team mates James Bulicatin and Sheider Nebato ended their game into a draw in board 2 and 3.

In the distaff side,  the Lady Eagles edged the Lady Bulldogs, 2.5-1.5, and still on top
with 9 points, 1.5 points ahead with solo second place lady Maroons with 7.5 points.

The Diliman State University under coach Fide Master Leonardo Carlos lost to the Lady Tamaraws,
1-3, that put the latter’s (FEU) in third position with 6 points.

Defending womens champion Green Archers halved the point with the Lady Warriors, 2-2, for 4.5 points at fourth place.

According to tournament arbiter IA/NM Elias Lao, action will resume next Saturday and

Sunday at the same venue.
