PULPUL BEATS US OPEN CHAMPION; GABICA, CUARTERO OUSTED IN RP

DEMOSTHENES Pulpul continues his winning ways after beating reigning US Open women’s 9-ball champion Kelly Fisher of the Unites States, 9-2, to post his fourth straight wins in the on-going inaugural Philippine Open (Ten Ball) Pool Championship on Saturday at the SM Megamall (Megatrade Hall 2) here in Mandaluyong City, Metro Manila.

The 2008 World Ten Ball semi-finalists Pulpul, playing under the banner of Cebuano sportsman/ businessman Paul Monera Magadan of Magi Group and MPC trading, earlier brought downed Mario Tolentino, 9-4, in the featured third round match on Friday.

Also unbeaten were Lui Hui Chan of Chinese-Taipei, who brought downed Rudi Susanto of Indonesia, 9-5, Radoslaw Babica of Poland, who clobbered Marcus Chamat of Sweden, 9-2, and Ricky Yang of Indonesia, who dealt Chang Pei Wei of Chinese-Taipei, 9-6.

Jeffrey de Luna also kept the Filipino flag flying high ousting WPA World No.1 Ralf Souquet of Germany, 9-3, on Friday and Oscar Dominguez of Mexico, 9-4, yesterday, to remain in contention in the loser’s brackets.

The $84,000 total pot prize event is applying a double elimination format with the champion getting the lion share of $20,000.

Meanwhile, Antonio Gabica and Alan Cuartero are the latest Filipino casualties after absorbing their second loses yesterday to current World Ten Ball ruler Darren Appleton of the Great Britain, 9-8, and Gabe Owen of the United States, 9-4, to join compatriots Tolentino, Marlon Manalo, James Al Ortega, Victor Arpilleda, Elvis Calasang, Resty Labastida, Oliver Villafuerte and 15-year-old Jonas Magpantay in the exit door.
