NATIONAL CAPITAL REGION (NCR) represented by Far Eastern University (FEU) defeated Region 2, 3-1, to grab the solo leadership board after the fourth round of the ongoing Commission on Higher Education (CHED)-National Finals chess team tournament yesterday at the Rizal Technological University (RTU) in Mandaluyong City.
Lyndon Sombilon and Luffe Magdalaga downed Malfred Sanchez and Jake Tumalinan on board 1 and 3, respectively. Sheider Nebato and Antonio Chavez Jr., meantime settled a draw over Mark Mendoza and Jake Furigay on board 2 and 4, in order.
“So far, so good, but still long way to go,” said 2-time Olympian Grandmaster (GM) Jayson Gonzales. The team’s assistant coach is National Master (NM) Alex Milagrosa.
The Tamaraw, who is fresh from a historic four-peat title in the 72nd UAAP chess team tournament, earlier beat Region 7, 3-1, in the Wednesday’s third round afternoon session.
In the distaff side, the Lady Tamaraw posted 3-1 victory over Region 4-A to remain on top. As expected, veteran internationalists and 2006 Doha Asian games representative Woman National Master Jedara Docena and Jenny Rose Palomo carried the fight for the Morayta-based school by crushing Michela Angeline Fajardo and Gladys Atienza on board 1 and 3. FEU team mates Rulp Ylem Jose and Ronna Reigner Senora split the point over Micah Andrea Medina and Charmine Casimina on board 2 and 4. They also defeated Region 10, 3-1, in the third round on Wednesday.
Tournament director is Limneo Cordero and assisted by arbiters Kim Dumdum, Ronnie Tabudlong, Raul Cruz and national masters Erwin Carag and Mauro Yasay.
