MISTICA, ALMOITE TOPS LA 9-BALL OPEN

Filipino Ramon “Maestro” Mistica went undefeated through the field of 32 players at Hard Times Bellflower last weekend winning over Fach Garcia 9-2 in the finals of L A 9-Ball Open in Los Angeles, California. Garcia reach the hot seat by beating compatriot Jun Almoite 7-6..In the hotseat match, Mistica showed his brilliance in controlling the cue ball and demolished Garcia 7-2..

On the left side of the bracket, Almoite recovered from his earlier loss, eliminated Mexican and former World Champion Ismael “Morro” Paez 5-1 in the semi final to earn the right to face Garcia again, only to lose in another hill-hill match, spoiling an all Filipino finals..

Hardtimes Bellflower is hosting a monthly open 9-ball tournament every first weekend of the month..This is the time where most filipino pool players around L.A. and San Diego area come together and show their talent in pool.On the other hand, Jun “Dr. J” Almoite took down the competition at the 1st Danny K’s Summer 9-Ball Shootout July 9-10, 2010 in Anaheim, California.. A handicapped tournament where players were classified based on their skills and talents. Danny K himself added $1,000 to the full field of 80 players who signed up..

Almoite went undefeated through the event, besting Louie Jaimes 10-2, Jeff Martinez 10-4, Bubba Williams 10-2, Chito Manaloto 10-3, Tuan Nguyen 10-5, Eddie Cohen 10-4 and Henry Brodt 10-8 in the hot seat..From the one loss side, Brodt has to face another strong player Mike Davis, who dealt him his second loss and a 3rd place finish.. A true double elimination tournament, Davis, with the same handicap with Jun has to beat Almoite two sets of race to 9 to take the crown but Jun, who were down 8-2 in the first set, rallied to win 7 games in a row to take the title.
