MANILA, PHILIPPINES—FORMER University of the East (UE) mainstay Stephen Manzanero turned back veteran campaigner Paterno Pitero in the seventh and final round to rules the just ended Philippine Eagles Non-Master Chess Tournament 1950 Below Club Rapid Rating at the covered court of Barangay San Isidro, Cainta, Rizal last Sunday. Manzanero finished unbeaten with 6.5 points in seven outings and receive the top prize of P3,000 in the event organized by Businessman/Chess Enthusiasts Ed Madrid and Philippine Eagles in close cooperation with Barangay San Isidro Council and National Association of Philippine Chess Arbiters (NAPCA) headed by Boyet Tardecilla, Roland Linan, Cecil Canares, Gina Kobayashi and NM Mirabeau Maga. Jan Jodilyn Fronda, Mark Bonifacio, Joel Cocjin finished in a three-way tie for second place with 5.5 points each. Pitero, meantime won the Recomono cup senior category along with lawyer Virgilio Sevandal with 4.5 points each.Carlo Carangyagan tallied 5.0 points for top kiddy award. BY: MARLON BERNARDINO
