LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA—WHILE Lone Filipino invited player and top seed GM Wesley So (2627) is busy competing in the on-going 71st Corus Chess In Netherlands, GM candidate Julio “Ino” Catalino Sadorra is eyeing to complete his GM title status before the year end.
Sadorra, who decided not to participate in the just concluded 1st Gov. Umali Chess Cup in Palayan City, Nueva Ecija (where GMs Mark Paragua and Eugene Torre shared the top honors) to concentrate reviewing his TOEFL ( test for English as foreign Language) in Singapore.
However, according to his father Bing Sadorra in an email to Malibay Chess Club that his son is schedule to participate as many tough tournament this year.
“Ino did not participate in the Umali Cup because he is reviewing and will be taking the TOEFL(test for English as foreign languge) in Singapore . We plan for him to participate in Battle of GMs in March 24-31, Asian Continental and Subic Open in May 12-31 Subic, Zonal in Vietnam and Vietnam Open, Singapore Open, KL open, Korea open and GMA & Pichay . He has to participate in the Vietnam Open to defend his title as1st ASEAN champion.” said Bing.

Currently, the Philippines had a total ten grandmaster that includes Eugene Torre, the late Rosendo Balinas, Rogelio “Joey” Antonio Jr., Buenaventura “Bong” Villamayor, Nelson Mariano II, Mark Paragua, Wesley So, Darwin Laylo, Jayson Gonzales and John Paul Gomez.
Ronald Dableo, Europe based Roland “Kulot” Salvador and US based Rogelio “Banjo” Barcenilla so far are the Filipinos inched closer to obtain GM title with two of the three required GM norms tucked under their belt.
Sadorra, IM Rolando Nolte, IM Ronald Bancod, FM Fernie Donguines, meanwhile earned one GM norm.
