CEBUANO IM SEVILLANO TIED FOR FIRST WITH GM AKOBIAN IN NATIONAL OPEN IN LAS VEGAS

FORMER US Open champion International Master Enrico “Ikong” Sevillano tied for first with Grandmaster Varuzhan Akobian in the recently concluded 2009 National Open Chess Tournament in Las Vegas Nevada U.S.A, over the weekend.

The Cebuano native Sevillano, a protegee of sportsman/ National Master Matias “Bombi” Aznar beat GM Evgeny Bareev in the last round with black pieces using Modern Benoni to clinched first place with Akobian, both finish with five points after six games of play.

Akobian, a frequent Manila visitor, on the other hand defeated Laurent Fressinet to catch up Sevillano on top.
Thirteen players led by GM Gabriel Sargissian was tied at third place in the bunch of 4.5 pointers.
Other Filipino entry IM Ricky de Guzman nipped Kyle Morrison to joint 16th place with Fressinet along six others in the group of 4.0 pointers. FM Hugo Villanueva, meanwhile score 3.0 points to landed at 35th to 53rd placers.
