BATA, DJANGO GUNNING QUARTER-FINALS SEAT IN WORLD CUP OF POOL

AFTER getting the much needed break, the Filipino dynamic duo Efren “Bata” Reyes and Franciso “Django” Bustamante are aiming a quarter-final seat in the on-going 2009 PartyCasino.net World Cup of Pool at the SM North EDSA Activity Center.

Reyes and Bustamante, who won the title in Matchroom Sport’s initial staging of the prestigious event three year’s ago in Newport, South Wales, made an easy 8-3 victories over Qatar rivals Bashar Hussain and Mohammed Ali Bi Ali, 8-3, in Day 1, late Tuesday.

The top two players of Puyat Sports stable goes up against the survivor of Austria and Italy tussle yesterday.

“I’ll be happy in a victory by any RP team. I’ll be happier if it’s an all-Filipino final,” said Reyes, the team skipper of Philippine Team B, seeded only fifth in the current competition.

An all-Filipino final is possible since the Reyes-Bustamante pair is in the upper bracket and the Dennis Orcollo-Ronato Alcano duo is in the lower group.

Orcollo and Alcano, representing Philippine Team A from Busy Promotions opened their campaign against the Thai tandem of Nitiwat Kanjanasri and Surethep Phoochalam last night. If the pair of Orcollo and Alcano past the Thai squad, there next opponent will be Denmark or Russia, tomorrow (Friday) at 6 pm.

Defending champion the United States and 2007 China also won their respective opening-round matches, advancing to the Round of 16 of the prestigious event featuring 32 teams from 31 nations competing for the $60,000 first prize from the total cash pot of $250,000.

Americans Rodney Morris and Shane Van Boening edged the tandem of Maltans Tony Drago and Alex Borg, 8-7, while Chinese Fu Jian-Bo and Li He-wen, nipped Korean belles, Ga Young Kim and Yun Mi Lim, 8-5.

France and Indonesia were the other early second-round qualifiers, eliminating Canada and India, respectively.

Frenchmen Stephan Cohen and Vincent Facquet defeated Canadians Tyler Edey and Jason Klatt, 8-1, while Indons Muhammad Simanjuntuak and Muhammad Zulfikri routed Indians Raj Hundal and Dharminder Singh Lilly, 8-3.

“We had a bit of luck but we also played well and had some good shots. When you’re down 6-1, as Canada were, it is very difficult and the pressure can get to you, that’s what happened when they missed the 9-ball but that’s the way it goes.” said Facquet.
