Gallego rules them all in Bangkok

Gallego Rules Bangkok Leg

BANGKOK, Thailand - Ramil Gallego of the Philippines rallied from 1-5 down to prevail over Hong Kong's Au Chi Wai 11-8 to capture the Bangkok leg of the San Miguel Asian 9-Ball Tour yesterday here at the Bang Na Hall.

Japan-based Gallego got off to a poor start allowing Au to take a huge lead in the final of this event organised by ESPN STAR Sports.

However, the Filipino cue artist didn't lose confidence as he rallied to sweep the next five racks to carve out a narrow 6-5 lead.

After splitting the next two racks with Au, Gallego then extended the gap to 8-6 after the Hong Kong player's dry break and foul in the 14th rack.

Gallego had a dry break himself in the 15th but the 2004 Tokyo 9-Ball champion managed to keep Au at bay to sit on the hill, 10-8. The Filipino then closed out the match as the appreciative pro-Filipino crowd led by Philippine Ambassador Antonio Rodriguez roared in approval.

"I never lost hope even when I was behind. I knew that I had a chance to catch up," said Gallego, who was a replacement for 2004 World Pool champion Alex Pagulayan.

Gallego's victory earned for himself the top prize of US$10,000. Au, a snooker specialist from the former crown colony, settled for US$5,000.

In the semi-finals earlier in the day, Gallego scored a come-from-behind 11-8 triumph over two-time World Pool champion Chao Fong Pang of Chinese Taipei while Au beat Li He-Wen of China 11-9.

The Tour moves on to Kaohsiung, Taiwan in August before concluding in Jakarta in September.

The Asian Tour is the only ranking tour in Asia for players to qualify to the World Pool Championship. The top ten finishers at the end of this year's Tour will automatically enter the World Pool Championships. A total money purse of US$40,000 is up for grabs in each leg of the event.

Now in its fourth year, the San Miguel Asian 9-Ball Tour is offering a top prize of US$10,000 for the champion of each leg and US$5,000 to the runner-up.

Last year saw Yang claim the Kaohsiung leg and finish runner-up in two other legs. Filipinos won the other three legs: Gandy Valle ( Singapore), Reyes (Jakarta) and Ronato Alcano (Manila).

The San Miguel Asian 9-Ball Tour is sanctioned by the Asian Pocket Billiard Union and organized by ESPN STAR Sports' Event Management Group (EMG). San Miguel Beer is the title sponsor for the Tour. Iwan Simonis and Aramith supply the official tablecloth and official balls respectively. Brunswick Metro is the official pool table. STAR Sports is the official broadcaster.

Besides the total prize money of US$160,000, the top 10 players on the Tour Order of Merit every year will directly qualify into the World Pool Championship.

Hill-Hill Win For Orcollo at Reno Open

Dennis Orcollo proved he can play more than just 8-ball this week with a run through the field of 159 players at the Reno Open.

Orcollo, who also earned wins earlier this year at the US Bar Table 8-Ball Championship and the Hard Times IPT Qualifier, looked unstoppable all week as he scored notable wins over Corey Deuel, Tim Hall and Rich Geiler. Orcollo took the hot-seat on Sunday with a dominating 9-1 win over former Reno Open champion Kim Davenport.

Davenport went to the one loss side where he had to face Texan Jui-Lung Chen. Chen doesn't get out to play in many major events, but he made the most of this one with wins over Victor Ignacio, Chris Bartram, Bobby Hunter, Gandy Valle, Warren Kiamco and Gabe Owen to his credit. The third place finish would have to be enough for Chen though, as Davenport earned a hard fought 9-7 win to set up a rematch with Orcollo in the finals.

Orcollo looked on his way to another dominating win in the finals as he sprinted out to an early 5-1 lead. Davenport then showed that he can still make a ball or two and won six straight games to take the lead 7-5 and then took the match 9-7 to force a second set in the true double elimination finals.

In the second set of the finals, Orcollo got to the hill first at 8-7 but scratched on the break and watched Davenport tie the match at hill-hill with a flawless table run. Davenport broke the final game and made a ball, but had no position on the one ball. Davenport pushed out to a long straight shot on the one and Orcollo took advantage with a slow rolling shot on the one ball followed by a dicey table run to earn the 9-8 victory.

You can view all of the match results with our online brackets and we will have complete results from this event later in the week.

-Pool World Loses The Miz -

Mizerak had been hospitalized since January when he was admitted for gall bladder problems. He had been in a coma for the past few months. Mizerak never completely recovered for the stroke he suffered in 2001.

Mizerak won the US Open 14.1 Championship an amazing four straight years from 1970 to 1973 and was the US Open 9-Ball Champion in 1978. He was inducted into the BCA Hall of Fame 1980 as the youngest member ever and was named the 6th best player of the century by Billiards Digest in 2000.

Those who knew Mizerak, will remember him more for what he did away from the table than what he did at the table. Ladies Spirit Tour Director Heather Barkley, a former employee of Mizerak's, commented "Steve wasn't about pool. He was about people. He loved people and he loved doing for people. When I was his secretary, he would constantly be bombarded with autograph requests. I asked him once if that didn't become annoying and he replied that If people wanted his autograph, it meant that he had done something in his life that meant something to those people. He felt that giving them an autograph was the least he could do."
